Hello Friends!

Welcome back to my Artsy Life! I hope you are do well today!

Today marks a new themed challenge on Digi Doodle Studios Challenge Blog! The exciting and super fun theme this month is “Pink and/or Halloween”

Halloween Whimsy…

I love the vibrancy of Halloween colors! I especially love illustrating Halloween images and creating Halloween cards. But, I let me just say, I don’t illustrate evil things. I enjoy more of the whimsical and colorful side of Halloween which you will clearly see in my illustrations.

Today I’m sharing my contribution to our Digi Doodles Pink and/or Halloween Challenge

Fab Halloween Trio…

I couldn’t resist creating with one of my new Halloween “Witches” for this challenge. Meet the adorable trio, “Salem, Cleo & Furrgie”

Let’s Get Started…

To begin, I sized, printed, and cut my image using my die cutting machine (full supply list below).

At this point, I wasn’t exactly sure what design I wanted to use, so I also printed out my new “Wonky Halloween” digi papers because there are several super fun pink and black designs in this 6×6 paper pack

Time to Color…

Once my image was printed and cut, I colored the trio with Copic Sketch Markers (colors below) It’s always fun for me to create and color with a color theme in mind because it often stretches me out of what might be considered the norm. How about you?

Needless to say, I really enjoyed coloring Salem’s hair PINK! To tie everything together, I just weaved that fabulous pink color throughout my design.

Once my Halloween image was colored, I decided to create a round shaped card to add to the whimsy of this Digi Stamp. Two black circles, one for the front of the card and the other for the back of the card. Another, slightly smaller, circle cut out from the pattern paper, and an even smaller circle using white cardstock.

I decided to use the smaller white circle behind the image, but it needed a little something. So, I stenciled a cluster of random dots using distress inks. I really wasn’t concerned with making the dots perfect because I knew most of them would be covered with my image.

I also cut out a couple super cute whimsical clouds and added a little color to the edges to make them pop. Aren’t they adorable?!

Let’s Talk About the Sentiment…

You will notice that my sentiment is white on a black background. If you were stamping the image, that wouldn’t be an issue. But, because the sentiment is a digi stamp, the file is black. For this project, I wanted my sentiment to be white!

For those of us that use graphic programs, this can easily be changed by inverting the image. But I know many of you may not be familiar with graphic programs…so….here’s how you can alter the color of your digi stamp, and/or sentiment, by using Microsoft Word.

Create a Shape…

  • Open Microsoft Word and create a new blank document
  • On the top bar, select Insert/Shape, a drop down menu will appear. Choose your desired shape
  • The cursor will turn to a cross hair when moved over your document
  • Draw your shape by dragging the cross hair cursor on your document
  • You can also change the color of your shape with the shape fill tool directly above your document

Once you have your shape in place, it’s time to insert your sentiment. The sentiment file is a PNG file (Portable Networks Graphic File) which means the background is transparent so you can easily place it over your shape without a white background. It also means that the PNG is considered a picture file, so we have to treat it as one.

To Insert Your Sentiment…

  • Go back up to the top menu bar select Insert/Pictures (remember the sentiment is a picture file)
  • In the dropdown menu, choose where you want to get your sentiment from. If you saved it on your computer, and hopefully you did, select “This Device” and a new window will open showing your files from your computer.
  • Locate your the sentiment you want to use highlight it and click Insert on the bottom right of the window
  • Once inserted, place the sentiment over your shape
  • You can now change the color of the Sentiment, but be sure the sentiment is selected before attempting to change the color or the option won’t work

And that’s all there is to it! You can now print your newly colored Sentiment, and die cut it, as I did, or hand cut it, if you prefer.

Putting it All Together…

With all my elements cut, printed, and colored, it was time to assemble my card.

Remember I mentioned that I cut out 2 black circles? One was for the front base where I was able to build up my card.

  • I first attached my pattern paper circle on to the large black stitched circle
  • Next, I played around with my clouds until their positioning made sense to me. I even tucked one behind the front cover to help give dimension
  • The stenciled circle came next which I placed slightly off center on the cover
  • I then centered my colored image on the stenciled circle or wonky moon.
  • I placed my sentiment on the upper left side of my card and attached another die cut banner of patterned paper behind it.
  • Because my card was already very colorful, I decided to only add a couple of coordinating enamel dots to either side of the sentiment as if the banners were pinned together.

Stand Up…

There are many great things about a handmade greeting card. Other than some of the obvious, like giving them away to bring joy to others, they can also be displayed.

In order to stand this round card up to be displayed, I scored the other black circle about 1/4″ from the top and bottom and folded it back. I attached the top fold to the back top of the card cover. The bottom fold helped to balance the card so it could stand up.

And there it is! My whimsical Pink Halloween themed card is finished…now who to give it to?
