Seashell Wishes




Hello Friends! Welcome back to my Artsy Life!

Well, it may be September already, but I am going to try to squeeze just a little more summer in my days before the temps drop.

Always on My Mind

I’m a beach junkie, sunshine seeking, water loving, seashell collecting, type of girl.

It’s true. The beach is always on my mind. Especially during the winter months, when my beach possibilities are the furthest from my reality.

I have been known to drag out the summer for as long as I can, even in the work I produce.

Last Looks

Just before we moved to a different state, we spent the day at the beach. As we were leaving, I looked back at the water in awe of the beautiful sunset, and hoped I would be back soon.

This was the inspiration for my illustration of Digi Doodles “Ava Shell Collector” Digi Stamp.

Seashell Wishes

Today I am thinking about the beach. Unfortunately, at this moment, I am not able to travel to the beach. But, wishing I could take a walk on the beach, gave me a chance to do the next best thing…create a handmade card using “Ava Shell Collector” while reminiscing on my beach days.

I sized and printed “Ava Shell Collector” on a piece of marker paper (my full supply list below). Marker paper is very smooth, and some are thicker than others. Good quality marker paper accepts ink well without bleeding. For a more detailed look at paper distinctions, please visit my Art Paper page.

I cut my image out with my die cutting machine and I colored her with Copic Markers.

As you can see, the slightly off-white color of this particular paper didn’t effect my final colored image at all. In fact, I believe it softened the look. What do you think?

Background Splash

I wanted to create a background filled with colors of the sea, but I didn’t want to take away from the lovely “Ava Shell Collector”.

A loose, and colorful, splash of color would not only make my image pop, but also look especially graceful. So, I sprinkled a couple of powder bursts colors on my glass surface. They react with water so I spritzed sparingly, and watched as the colors came to life.

When I felt I had enough liquid, I pressed my paper in the colorful puddles to give the splash effect, and heat set the paint with my heat gun.

This step is not necessary. You can wait for it dry if you prefer.

Tip: There is no right or wrong when using this technique. It’s really a matter of preference for the amount of color and, color combinations. But keep in mind, the more water you add, the lighter the colors will become. So have fun and experiment!

After I practiced my color splashes on a few pieces of cardstock, I decided to take the plunge, so to speak, and splash my final background paper where I had previously printed out one of my beachy sentiments from my new Beach Day Sentiments Collection.

These fabulous bursts of color gave me the look I imagined in my head, and as it turns out, the perfect medium for my background splash. Love when that happens!

Time to Get it Together

With all my elements finished, it was time to assemble my card.

A trendy Stitched Slimline card style with a piece of pattern paper from Digi Doodle Studios “Sea Breeze” Digi Paper Pack helped bring my project to life.

I added a few fabulously adorable seashells from one of my “Sandy Toes, Salty Kisses, and Seashell Wishes” beach days.

I keep several boxes, and small containers, of my little beach treasures as joyful reminders. It always makes me smile when I can pull them out for such a moment like this.

Worked perfectly, don’t you think?

My slimline card easily fits in a #10 envelope, but, I wanted to make this one from white cardstock so I could add a splash of color to my envelope to coordinate with my Seashell Wishes.

I hope I have inspired you today to try something new, or simply create something Fabulously Heart-Warming to bring you, or someone else, a little bit of joy for the moment.
